We grow up learning to label, categorize, and sort; people, objects, and concepts that exist within our environment. Maybe we do this so that we might make sense of it all--so that we might better comprehend our world as well as our own existence.

I do think this form of measurement is necessary to an extent. It allows us to survive in this physical world. However, it also seems to limit our ability to learn, teach, and grow. It creates an invisible wall which obstructs our path. We may not even realize when we are stuck, marching against the barricade like a walking wind-up toy.

Finding a balance between extremes--black and white, light and dark, up and down, left and right--might present a niche where we are able to exist most comfortably in the long run. Maybe the best place to be is in the gray.
